Dear Editor,

Transgenders are people who have a gender identity that differs from the gender forced on them at birth. However, just like any other people, they are humans and have the same rights as us. Many developed, developing and even some underdeveloped countries have accepted transgenders in their society and have the same rights and responsibilities that are mentioned in the United Nations’ Human Rights Charter. But unfortunately, the Pakistani people can simply not accept and tolerate transgenders into their community as they think that they are lesser beings who deserve to be looked down upon.

The conditions for transgenders in Pakistan are extremely horrible. For starters, most transgenders are left to fend for themselves by their own parents. If these orphans are lucky, they are taken in by either orphanages or a haven which is meant specifically for transgenders. Even in those havens, the living situation is awfully poor. There are no proper beds for sleeping and the kitchens are small and filthy. The food does not meet any standard and is probably worse than prison food. The quarters are foul and unclean. The dwellers (transgenders) do not have any access to medicine. They have no jobs and have no method of earning money, which is the basis for a considerably good life. This is why these transgenders are forced to beg, dance and entertain for only a small amount of money. The transgenders don’t have a right to good healthcare or a good education.

The government claims that they have appointed new laws in favor of the transgender community and the govt. thinks that these laws are enough but they are not. We can do many things to fight for transgender equality. We can start a social media campaign in favor of the transgenders. We can support a transgender by visiting them and financially supporting them. We can also notify the government about the living conditions that the transgenders are forced to endure so that the government can take steps to help the transgender community.

We, as a nation should fight against this dense and foolish mentality to show to the world that Pakistan and the Pakistani people are tolerant and acceptable. Every single Pakistani national should declare war against this ugly truth and give to the transgenders their rightful place in society.
