Issue 1 - Editor's Note

16th July, 2021

I am immensely excited to present TNS Rise Up & Write’s first magazine issue, focusing on the theme of gender equality. The Thomson Reuters foundation ranks Pakistan as the 6th most dangerous country for women in the entire world, which is an embodiment of the many dangers women and girls face in this country. However, the severe gender discrimination is further entrenched in the cultural and societal values of the country, and affect both men and women in different, but deeply consequential ways. Admirably, the students of TNS Beaconhouse have never shied away from advocating for gender equality and equal rights for all. Last winter, several DP1 students participated in the Harvard Global Women’s Empowerment Competition, using their creative voices to advocate for the biggest issues facing women today in Pakistan. From honour killings to gender-based violence, the essays captured powerful representations of horrific issues in Pakistan, and some of these essays are even featured in this issue of the magazine.

It was wonderful to witness students from various grades submitting content to the magazine with the vision of promoting universal equality and empowerment. The diversity of perspective and considerable talent in the student body is clearly evident from the range of pieces submitted. From poetry and essays to collages and drawings, all of the submissions came together to encapsulate the fight for gender equality. Aside from the amazing content contributors to the magazine, this issue would not be what it is without the efforts of the entire editorial team. A particular thanks to Zoya Qureshi for collaborating with me to make the relevant directorial and artistic decisions, to Anum Azhar for designing the visual layout for the entire magazine, and to Sereen Yusuf for taking the lead on efficiently tracking and organising every submitted issue. This issue is the first of many more issues to come, and I am so excited to work with the entire editorial team and student body when the academic year starts again to continue on with our next issue.

P.S. stay tuned for the publication of TNS Rise Up & Write’s “Quarantales” Poetry Book, which will be available to the public at the start of the next academic year!
